According to PrideRock Wildlife Refuge Marketing Director Kayla McCain,

“It’s no secret that people are attracted to lions, tigers and other big cats. These wonderful animals capture our imaginations, but it’s important to remember that wild animals should not be pets, especially when the big cats in the US face serious problems. Today, the estimated number of big cats in captivity is about 10,000 animals, and about 7,000 of them are tigers. This means that there are more tigers in captivity in the United States than there are in the wild. What’s even more alarming is that only 6% of these big cats live in recognized places like licensed zoos or zoos. This situation highlights the important role of refuges like PrideRock Wildlife Refuge in providing protection and support during this crisis.

“Located in Terrell, PrideRock Wildlife Refuge has served as a permanent refuge for abused and unwanted animals for 32 years. During this time, we have rescued more than 70 animals from across the country from California to West Virginia. Our goal is to give these animals—a diverse group that includes big and small cats, bears and wolves—not just a safe place but a second chance at a life full of dignity and respect. However, this project is only possible with the support of our community.

“Each year, we enthusiastically participate in the Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day, an important event that brings the community together to support local nonprofits through generous giving .For PrideRock, this day is more than just a fundraiser; it represents the compassion and community spirit that is central to our ongoing efforts. Unlike other wildlife rescues, PrideRock is closed to the public to ensure our animals can live out their remaining days in peace.

“That said, we rely heavily on our community to help us continue our work of love whether through volunteer opportunities or financial support. North Texas Giving Day is our largest event of the year and fundraising year, and the donations we receive have had a profound impact on our operations at the shelter.

“Over the past six years, we have raised more than $106,000 through this giving event. These funds have allowed us to purchase critical equipment, such as a skid steer tractor, which is essential for moving large quantities of goods and to maintain our roads and trails Donations also support the daily needs of our animals, including their food and veterinary care.

“One of the biggest impacts we’ve had from North Texas Giving Day donations has been the ability to build new animal shelters. For example, in 2022, thanks to $42,000 raised, we were able to build a what’s new WaylonThe Bengal tiger that came to us came from South Texas after its owner could no longer care for it. This new enclosure has ensured that Waylon has a safe and comfortable home, reflecting the direct and important impact of our community’s giving.

“Looking ahead, our goal for this year’s North Texas Day of Giving is to raise $40,000. This year, we plan to focus on renovating six vacant lots and turning them into three large, renovated kennels for big cats waiting to be rescued. This renovation will cost us upwards of $130,000, but any money we receive from donors will help us better accommodate future animals and give them the space they need to thrive.

“The support of our community helps us continue our mission, build the necessary facilities, and prepare for future rescues. Together, we can ensure that more animals receive care and respect it deserves.”
